Alliance Floor Store Inc is a family-run flooring store and installation company based in Monroe, North Carolina. Ten years in this trade taught us where most flooring projects go wrong, and it is almost never the material. It is the gap between the store that sold it and the crew that installed it.

So we closed that gap. You choose the product with us, we measure your home ourselves, and our own installers lay it. If something is not right, there is nobody else to call and nobody to blame.

Why It Lasts

Four Things the Cheap Quote Leaves Out

A floor fails from underneath, not from the top. Here is what we refuse to skip.

Subfloor First

Flat, dry, sound. We check moisture and level before a single plank is ordered, because no flooring product on earth fixes a bad subfloor — it just hides it until it does not.

Acclimation Time

Wood and vinyl both move with temperature and humidity. Carolina summers are brutal on flooring installed the day it arrived. We let material sit in your house first.

Transitions and Trim

Thresholds, stair noses, quarter round, reducers. The parts people forget to quote and the first thing your eye lands on when they are done badly.

The Right Product for the Room

Solid hardwood does not belong in a basement. We will talk you out of the wrong material even when the wrong material costs more.

We did the whole first floor in LVP. What sold me was that they checked the subfloor and told me two rooms needed leveling before quoting. Two other companies quoted without ever looking under the carpet.

Refinished our red oak instead of replacing it, which is what I expected them to push. Saved us thousands and the floors look like new. Honest people, and the dust containment was better than I expected.

Picked the tile in their showroom on a Saturday and they were installing three weeks later. Same company the whole way, so there was never that thing where the store blames the installer.

Hardwood through the main level and carpet on the stairs and bedrooms. They moved all the furniture, hauled the old carpet away and finished a day early. Transitions between rooms are perfect.

Our Flooring

Hardwood Flooring in Monroe, NC

Solid and engineered hardwood supplied from our showroom and installed by our own crew — acclimated, flat and finished with the trim included.

Hardwood is still the floor people want, and it is the one where installation quality shows up most obviously. A hardwood floor is hundreds of individual boards that have to end up looking like one continuous surface, which means the subfloor has to be flat, the material has to be at the right moisture content, the layout has to be planned before the first row, and the expansion gaps have to be correct at every wall and transition.

We carry and install both solid and engineered hardwood in oak, maple, hickory, walnut and a range of prefinished and site-finished options. Solid hardwood is the traditional choice for main and upper levels: it can be refinished multiple times over decades, so it is genuinely a lifetime floor. Engineered hardwood has a real wood wear layer over a dimensionally stable core, which makes it far more tolerant of humidity swings and the only one of the two we will install over concrete or in a basement.

That distinction matters more in North Carolina than it does in a lot of the country. Our summers are humid and our winters run dry, and wood moves with that cycle. Every hardwood job we do includes acclimation time in your home before installation, moisture readings on both the subfloor and the material, and correct expansion allowance so the floor can move seasonally without gapping in January or cupping in July. Skipping those steps is why so many hardwood floors in this area look wrong within two years.

What This Includes

  • Solid hardwood in oak, maple, hickory and walnut
  • Engineered hardwood for concrete slabs, basements and humid spaces
  • Prefinished and site-finished options
  • Nail-down, glue-down and floating installation as the application requires
  • Subfloor flatness correction and moisture testing included
  • Stair treads, risers and landings to match
  • All transitions, thresholds, reducers and quarter round
  • Furniture moved and old flooring removed and hauled away

03

04

Any leveling or repair is done first, then we plan the layout so the boards run correctly and the cuts land where they should.

05

Installation, trim and cleanup

Floor installed, transitions and quarter round fitted, job site cleaned and old flooring hauled away.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does hardwood installation take?

Most single-level homes take three to five working days for installation, plus the acclimation period before it. Site-finished hardwood adds sanding, staining and coating time with drying between coats.

Can I put hardwood over a concrete slab?

Engineered hardwood, yes, with the right moisture barrier and after slab moisture testing. Solid hardwood over concrete is a warranty and failure risk we will not take on — we will tell you that rather than sell it to you.

Do you move the furniture?

Yes, moving furniture is included in our estimates. We ask you to clear small items, electronics and anything fragile or irreplaceable beforehand.

How much does hardwood cost in Monroe?

It depends on species, width, finish and how much subfloor prep your home needs. That last one is the variable most quotes hide, which is why we check it before giving you a number rather than after.

Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring in Monroe, NC

Fully waterproof, scratch-resistant and realistic enough that most people cannot tell. The most requested floor in Union County right now.

Luxury vinyl plank has taken over the residential flooring market in the last decade, and unlike most trends in this trade it deserves it. LVP is completely waterproof, highly scratch and dent resistant, comfortable and quiet underfoot, and the printing and embossing on the better products has gotten good enough that most people cannot identify it as vinyl from standing height.

For families with kids and dogs it is usually the correct answer, and we say that as a company that also sells hardwood. A dog's nails will mark a hardwood floor and will not mark a quality LVP. A spilled drink or an overflowing dishwasher that would be a disaster on wood or laminate is a mop on LVP. It handles basements, laundry rooms, kitchens, bathrooms and mudrooms where we would not install wood at all.

The quality range is enormous, though, and this is where a store matters more than a warehouse. Wear layer thickness is the single most important spec and the one that gets hidden — a 6 mil wear layer and a 20 mil wear layer look identical on the shelf and perform completely differently after five years of traffic. Rigid core products handle subfloor imperfections better than flexible ones. We will show you the difference in the showroom and tell you honestly which level your household actually needs, including when the cheaper one is fine.

What This Includes

  • Rigid core (SPC and WPC) waterproof vinyl plank
  • Glue-down LVP for commercial and high-traffic applications
  • Wear layers from residential to heavy commercial grade
  • Kitchens, bathrooms, basements, laundry and mudrooms
  • Whole-home installation with continuous runs and no thresholds between rooms
  • Subfloor leveling included where the product requires it
  • Matching transitions, stair noses and quarter round
  • Old flooring removed and hauled away

How the Job Runs

01

Showroom comparison

We put wear layers, cores and finishes side by side so you can see what the price difference actually buys you.

02

Free in-home measure

Rooms measured, subfloor flatness checked. LVP is thin and flexible enough to telegraph a bad subfloor, so this step is not optional.

03

Acclimation

Material sits in your home before installation. Vinyl expands and contracts with temperature, and an unacclimated floating floor can gap or peak.

04

Subfloor prep

Leveling, patching and any repair done first, and underlayment installed where the product calls for it.

05

Installation and finishing

Planks laid with correct expansion gaps, transitions and trim fitted, everything cleaned and hauled away.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LVP really waterproof?

The plank itself is, completely. Standing water will not damage it. What water can still do is get through the seams to the subfloor if it sits long enough, so a major flood still needs to be dried properly underneath.

What wear layer do I need?

For a typical family home, 12 mil or higher. For heavy traffic with large dogs or a rental property, 20 mil. Below 8 mil is builder-grade and will show traffic patterns within a few years.

Can LVP go over my existing floor?

Often yes, over tile, vinyl or well-adhered sheet goods if it is flat and sound. Over carpet, never. We check during the measure and tell you which it is.

How long does LVP installation take?

Most homes take two to four days depending on square footage and how much subfloor prep is needed. It is faster than hardwood and there is no finishing or drying time.

Laminate Flooring in Monroe, NC

Hard-wearing, budget-friendly and far better looking than it was ten years ago. The value pick for bedrooms, basements and rentals.

Laminate has a reputation problem left over from the early 2000s, when it was thin, hollow-sounding and obviously fake. Modern laminate is a different product. The wear layer on quality laminate is extremely hard — it outperforms hardwood on scratch resistance by a wide margin — and the printing and texture registration has improved to the point where it competes visually with vinyl at similar price points.

Where it genuinely wins is scratch resistance per dollar. If you have large dogs and a tight budget, quality laminate will hold up to nails better than hardwood will. It is also rigid and dense, so it feels more solid underfoot than thin vinyl, and the better products have attached underlayment that improves both sound and comfort.

Its limitation is water, and this is the honest conversation we have with every customer considering it. Standard laminate has a fiberboard core: get water into the seams and let it sit, and the core swells permanently. Water-resistant laminates have improved this considerably and handle spills wiped up promptly, but we still do not recommend laminate for bathrooms, laundry rooms or basements that have any history of moisture. For bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, offices and rental properties it is often the best value in the store.

What This Includes

  • Water-resistant and standard laminate in a range of thicknesses
  • Attached-underlayment products for better sound and comfort
  • High-AC-rating options for rentals and heavy traffic
  • Bedrooms, living areas, hallways, offices and rental turnovers
  • Floating installation over prepared subfloors
  • Subfloor leveling and underlayment where required
  • Matching transitions, stair noses and quarter round
  • Old flooring removed and hauled away

How the Job Runs

01

Showroom selection

We show you where laminate outperforms vinyl and where it does not, so the choice is based on your rooms rather than the price tag alone.

02

Free in-home measure

Rooms measured and subfloor checked for flatness. Floating floors over uneven subfloors develop movement and noise at the seams.

03

Acclimation

Material rests in your home so the core reaches equilibrium before installation, which prevents gapping and peaking later.

04

Subfloor prep and underlayment

Leveling and patching done, moisture barrier and underlayment installed where the product does not have it attached.

05

Installation and trim

Planks locked with correct expansion gaps at every wall, then transitions and quarter round fitted and the site cleaned.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is laminate waterproof?

No. Water-resistant laminate handles spills that get wiped up promptly, but standing water that reaches the core will swell it permanently. For bathrooms, laundry and basements, LVP is the right product instead.

Does laminate scratch easily?

The opposite — quality laminate is one of the most scratch-resistant floors available and outperforms hardwood significantly. That is its main advantage over wood for homes with dogs.

Can laminate be refinished if it wears out?

No. The image layer is printed, so once it wears through it has to be replaced. That is the trade-off against hardwood, which can be refinished several times across decades.

How long does laminate installation take?

Usually two to three days for an average home. Like LVP there is no finishing or drying time, so the floor is ready to walk on immediately.

Tile & Stone Flooring in Monroe, NC

Porcelain, ceramic and natural stone set on a properly prepared substrate — so nothing cracks in year two.

Tile is the most permanent floor we install and the least forgiving of shortcuts underneath. A tile floor is rigid. If the substrate below it moves at all, the tile cannot flex with it and the result is cracked tile or cracked grout lines — usually within the first year or two, and always in a way that cannot be repaired invisibly.

That is why our tile work is mostly about what happens before the tile. Subfloor deflection gets evaluated, because a floor that bounces will crack tile no matter how well it is set. Cement backer board or an uncoupling membrane goes down depending on the application. Wet areas get proper waterproofing, which is a separate system from the tile itself and the thing most commonly skipped on shower and bathroom installations. Then the layout gets planned so the cuts land in the least visible places and the pattern stays square to the room.

We supply and install porcelain, ceramic and natural stone for kitchens, bathrooms, entryways, laundry rooms, sunrooms and showers. Large-format porcelain has become the dominant request and it is the least forgiving of a non-flat substrate, so those jobs include the leveling work in the quote rather than as a surprise. Natural stone — marble, travertine, slate — is beautiful and requires sealing and specific maintenance, and we walk you through that honestly before you buy it rather than after.

What This Includes

  • Porcelain and ceramic tile in all formats, including large-format
  • Natural stone — marble, travertine, slate and granite
  • Kitchens, bathrooms, entryways, laundry and sunrooms
  • Shower walls, pans and wet-area waterproofing systems
  • Backer board and uncoupling membrane installation
  • Subfloor deflection assessment and leveling
  • Grout, sealing and color selection
  • Old flooring demolition, removal and haul-away

How the Job Runs

01

Showroom selection and layout

Choose tile, grout color and pattern with samples, and we discuss layout and cut placement before anything is ordered.

02

Free in-home measure and substrate check

We evaluate deflection, flatness and moisture, and tell you exactly what preparation the substrate needs.

03

Demolition and substrate preparation

Old flooring removed, then backer board, membrane or leveling installed depending on the application.

04

Waterproofing in wet areas

Showers and wet zones get a proper waterproofing system installed before tile — the step that separates a lasting shower from a costly one.

05

Setting, grouting and sealing

Tile set square to your layout, grouted, cleaned, and sealed where the material requires it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does tile crack after installation?

Nearly always substrate movement, not the tile. A subfloor that deflects, a missing uncoupling membrane, or tile set directly on plywood will crack regardless of tile quality. Prevention happens before the tile goes down.

Do I need to seal my tile?

Porcelain and most ceramic do not need sealing, though cement grout does. Natural stone needs sealing on installation and periodically afterward. We tell you which category yours falls into and what the maintenance is.

How long does a tile floor take?

Typically three to six days including demolition, substrate prep, setting, and grouting with cure time between stages. Tile cannot be rushed — thinset and grout need proper cure time.

Can you tile over my existing tile?

Sometimes, if the existing tile is well bonded and flat and the added height works with your doors and transitions. Usually removing it gives a better and more predictable result, and we will tell you which applies.

Carpet Installation in Monroe, NC

Bedrooms, stairs, basements and full homes — proper pad, stretched tight, seams placed where you will not see them.

Carpet is the floor people assume is simple, and it is the one where installation technique matters most invisibly. The difference between carpet that looks good for a decade and carpet that ripples, seams open up and wears out in traffic paths is almost entirely stretch, pad and seam placement — none of which you can see on the day it is installed.

Carpet has to be power-stretched, not just kicked into place. A kicker alone leaves the carpet under-tensioned, and within a year or two you get the ripples and waves that every homeowner recognizes and blames on the carpet. Pad matters as much as the carpet itself: it carries the traffic load, and a cheap pad under a good carpet will wear the carpet out from underneath long before the fiber fails. Seams get planned so they run with the light rather than across it, and away from the paths people actually walk.

We install carpet in bedrooms, family rooms, basements, stairs, offices and whole homes across Monroe and Union County. Stairs in particular are worth paying attention to — they take more wear than any other surface in a house and they are where installation skill shows most, especially on wrapped or capped treads and on winder steps where every piece has to be cut individually.

What This Includes

  • Residential carpet in a full range of fibers and constructions
  • Stain-resistant and pet-friendly options
  • Stairs, including wrapped, capped and winder treads
  • Basements, bedrooms, family rooms and offices
  • Commercial carpet and carpet tile for offices
  • Proper pad selection matched to the carpet and traffic
  • Power-stretched installation and planned seam placement
  • Old carpet and pad removed and hauled away

How the Job Runs

01

Showroom selection

Choose fiber, style and color with samples, and we explain what the pad options actually change for durability and comfort.

02

Free in-home measure

Rooms measured and seam layout planned around light, doorways and traffic paths before anything is ordered.

03

Old carpet removal

Existing carpet, pad, tack strip and staples removed and hauled away, and the subfloor checked and prepared.

04

Pad and tack strip

New tack strip installed and the correct pad laid for the carpet and the traffic it will take.

05

Power-stretched installation

Carpet power-stretched rather than kicked, seams sealed, edges trimmed and transitions fitted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does carpet ripple after a year or two?

Under-stretching, almost always. Carpet installed with a knee kicker instead of a power stretcher is not tensioned enough, and it relaxes into waves. Re-stretching fixes it, but doing it right the first time avoids it.

Does the pad really matter?

A great deal. The pad absorbs the traffic load and determines how the carpet feels and how long it lasts. A cheap pad under a quality carpet destroys the carpet from underneath — it is the wrong place to save money.

How long does carpet installation take?

Most homes are done in one to two days, including removing the old carpet. It is the fastest flooring installation we do.

Is carpet a bad idea with pets?

Not necessarily. Modern solution-dyed fibers with stain-resistant treatments handle pets far better than older carpets. If accidents are frequent, though, we will point you toward LVP for those rooms instead.

Hardwood Refinishing & Repair in Monroe, NC

Sanding, staining and recoating existing hardwood, plus board replacement — often a fraction of what replacement costs.

A surprising number of the floors we are called out to replace do not need replacing. Solid hardwood has real thickness above the tongue, which means it can be sanded back to bare wood and refinished several times across its life. A floor that looks worn out, scratched, greyed or dated is very often a floor that needs one day of sanding and a new finish rather than a demolition and a full replacement.

The process is straightforward but unforgiving of shortcuts. The floor gets sanded in progressive grits until the old finish and the damage are gone and the surface is uniform — skipping grits leaves swirl marks that only appear once the stain goes on, at which point the only fix is starting over. Edges and corners get done with an edger and by hand, because a drum sander cannot reach them. Then stain if you are changing color, and two or three coats of finish with buffing between coats.

We also do repairs without full refinishing: replacing damaged or water-stained boards, repairing gaps, fixing squeaks, replacing sections after a leak or a removed wall, and blending new boards into an existing floor. Blending is the hard part and where experience shows — matching species, grain, board width and finish sheen so the repair disappears. Refinishing the whole floor afterward is the reliable way to make a repair truly invisible, and we will tell you when it is worth it and when a spot repair will do.

What This Includes

  • Full sand and refinish of solid and thick-veneer engineered hardwood
  • Stain color changes, including going darker or to a natural finish
  • Screen-and-recoat for floors with worn finish but sound wood
  • Board replacement after water damage, pet damage or removed walls
  • Gap filling, squeak repair and loose board re-securing
  • Blending new boards into existing floors
  • Stair tread refinishing to match
  • Dust-containment sanding equipment

How the Job Runs

01

Assessment and honest recommendation

We check the wear layer thickness and the damage. If the floor can be saved we tell you, even though replacement would be the bigger sale.

02

Repairs first

Damaged boards replaced, gaps addressed, squeaks fixed and loose boards secured before any sanding starts.

03

Progressive sanding

Multiple grits in sequence, with edges and corners done by edger and by hand, until the surface is uniform and free of swirl marks.

04

Stain and sample boards

If you are changing color, we apply samples on your actual floor so you choose based on how the stain reads on your wood, not on a chart.

05

Finish coats and cure

Two to three coats of finish with buffing between them, then cure time before furniture returns. We tell you exactly when you can walk on it and when you can move back in.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my floor can be refinished?

Look at a floor register or a threshold to see the board's cross section. Solid hardwood almost always has enough material above the tongue for at least one more sanding. Thin-veneer engineered often does not. We check this at the estimate.

How long does refinishing take?

Typically three to five days for an average home: sanding, staining and multiple finish coats with drying time between. Water-based finishes cure faster than oil-based, and we will explain the trade-off.

How much dust does sanding create?

We use dust-containment sanding equipment, which captures the large majority of it. It is not zero — some fine dust always escapes — so we seal off adjacent rooms and cover what stays in the house.

Can I stay in the house during refinishing?

You can stay, but you cannot walk on the floors during the process and finish odor is noticeable with oil-based products. Most clients stay elsewhere for the finishing days, especially with a whole-floor refinish.

Hardwood vs. Luxury Vinyl: Which One Actually Belongs in Your House?

Wide-plank gray luxury vinyl flooring compared with hardwood

This is the question we answer more than any other across the sample counter, and most people arrive having already framed it wrong. They ask which one is better. Neither is better. They fail in different ways, and the right choice depends on four things about your specific house — none of which is personal taste.

1. What is under the floor

This decides more than anything else. Solid hardwood needs a wood subfloor and a space that stays within a reasonable humidity range. It cannot go over a concrete slab and it does not belong in a basement, regardless of what anyone tells you or how much you want it there.

If you have a slab, your options are engineered hardwood with a proper moisture barrier, or vinyl. If you have a basement, vinyl is the answer. This one variable eliminates half the debate for a lot of homes in Union County before taste ever enters the conversation.

2. Water exposure, realistically assessed

Not whether you expect a flood, but whether the room routinely gets wet. Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, mudrooms and basements all have recurring water exposure. Hardwood in those rooms is a bet that nothing will ever overflow or leak, and appliances do both eventually.

LVP is fully waterproof. A dishwasher line that lets go overnight is a cleanup rather than a replacement. That is not a marketing claim, it is the actual material property, and it is the reason LVP has taken over kitchens.

3. What walks on it

Large dogs are hard on hardwood. Nails mark the finish, and while some species and finishes resist it better than others, no wood floor survives an active dog without showing it. Owners either accept the patina or spend the floor's life frustrated.

LVP and laminate both handle nails far better. If you have big dogs, young kids with toys, or a high-traffic household and you also care about the floor looking new in five years, the wood is going to disappoint you.

What we actually tell customers

If your heart is set on hardwood and you have dogs, you can still have it — just choose a wire-brushed or textured finish in a harder species like hickory. Texture hides nail marks in a way a smooth satin finish never will. That single choice changes how the floor ages.

4. How long you intend to stay

Solid hardwood is a lifetime floor because it can be refinished several times across decades. If you are staying twenty years, the ability to sand it back and start over in year twelve is real value that vinyl cannot match — when LVP wears out, it gets replaced.

If you are staying five years, that advantage never gets used. You paid for refinishability you will not use, and the next owner gets it.

What about resale value?

People bring this up first and it matters least. Hardwood does carry a perception premium with buyers, that is true. But a worn hardwood floor with visible pet damage shows worse at listing than a clean LVP floor, and the premium disappears if the wood is not in good condition.

Pick the floor that fits how you live. A floor in good condition at sale time serves you better than the right category in bad condition.

The quality trap on both sides

Both categories have enormous quality ranges, and the specs that matter are the ones not printed in large type. For LVP it is wear layer thickness — 6 mil and 20 mil look identical on the shelf and perform completely differently after five years. For engineered hardwood it is veneer thickness, which determines whether it can ever be refinished at all.

A cheap LVP will outlast a cheap engineered hardwood, and a good engineered hardwood will outlast a cheap LVP. Comparing categories without comparing quality tiers is how people end up disappointed with the correct choice.

Why Your Floor Has to Sit in Your House Before It Gets Installed

Boxes of prefinished solid hardwood laid out to acclimate before installation

Acclimation is the step customers most often ask us to skip, and it is the one we will not. When a floor gaps in January or buckles against a wall in August, the cause traces back to material that was installed the day it came off the truck almost every time.

Flooring is not dimensionally fixed

Wood is hygroscopic: it absorbs and releases moisture from the surrounding air until it reaches equilibrium. As it absorbs, it expands. As it releases, it contracts. This never stops for the life of the floor — it is a property of the material, not a defect.

Vinyl and laminate move too, for a different reason. Vinyl expands and contracts with temperature rather than humidity, and rigid core products can move a meaningful amount across a large room when the temperature swings.

Installation does not stop this movement. It accommodates it, through expansion gaps at the walls and correct spacing. But the accommodation only works if the material is at its normal in-service size when it is installed.

What goes wrong without it

Installed too dry, then it absorbs. Material stored in a dry warehouse and installed immediately will take on moisture in your home and expand. With nowhere to go, it pushes against walls and cabinets. Wood cups, buckles or peaks at the seams. Floating floors tent up off the subfloor.

Installed too wet, then it dries. Material that arrives having absorbed moisture in transit or in a humid storage space contracts after installation. You get gaps between boards — which is why so many homeowners notice gaps appearing in their first winter and assume the installer did poor work.

The floor may look flawless on day one in both cases. The failure appears one or two seasons later, which is exactly why this shortcut is so tempting to take.

Why North Carolina makes this worse

Our climate is hard on flooring specifically because of the swing. Summer here is humid, and indoor relative humidity climbs. Winter with the heat running is dry, and indoor humidity drops sharply. That annual cycle means a floor in Monroe moves more over a year than the same floor in a stable climate.

A floor installed at the wrong moisture content has less room to absorb that swing before something visible happens. Acclimation puts it in the middle of its range instead of at one extreme.

Acclimate the house too

Your HVAC should be running at normal living temperature during acclimation and installation. Acclimating material in a house with the heat off, in a new build that has never been conditioned, means it equilibrates to conditions that will never exist again once you move in.

How long it takes

It depends on the product, and we follow the manufacturer's specification because ignoring it voids the warranty. Solid hardwood typically needs several days and sometimes longer, with moisture readings taken on both the material and the subfloor to confirm the gap has closed. Engineered hardwood needs less. Vinyl and laminate usually need at least 48 hours at normal room temperature.

The material is spread out during this, not left stacked in sealed boxes in the garage. Boxes need to be opened and cross-stacked in the actual rooms where the floor is going, so air reaches the material and it equilibrates to the conditions it will live in.

The warranty angle worth knowing

Every flooring manufacturer specifies acclimation requirements, moisture content limits and subfloor conditions. If a floor fails and the manufacturer investigates, improper acclimation is one of the first things they check, and it voids the claim.

So when a quote comes in noticeably lower and the crew can start tomorrow, ask what the acclimation plan is. The answer tells you whether you are buying a floor or buying a problem with a two-season delay.

We build acclimation into every schedule we give you, which is why our start date and our finish date are further apart than some quotes. Call (704) 839-0001 and we will walk you through the timeline for your specific product.

Subfloor Prep: The Invisible Step That Decides If Your Floor Fails

Underlayment and moisture barrier laid over a prepared subfloor

Every flooring manufacturer publishes a flatness specification for their product. Almost no flooring quote mentions it. That gap is where most flooring failures live, and it is the single biggest difference between two quotes that look like they are for the same job.

The spec nobody quotes

Most manufacturers require something in the range of 3/16 of an inch of variation over ten feet. That is a tighter tolerance than most homes actually have, particularly older homes and homes with a crawlspace. Finding out whether your house meets it requires someone with a straightedge or a laser on the bare subfloor.

A quote given over the phone, or given while walking on the existing carpet without pulling any of it back, is a quote that has not checked this. The number is a guess, and it gets corrected on installation day when the crew discovers the reality — at which point you are negotiating from the worst possible position, with your furniture already in the garage.

What an unflat subfloor does to each floor type

Floating floors — LVP and laminate. These are the least forgiving, which surprises people. A floating floor bridges a dip rather than following it, so the planks flex when you walk across. That flexing works the locking mechanism at the seams until it loosens, and you get hollow spots, clicking, separation and eventually failed joints.

Glue-down. Adhesive does not fill a low spot; it just leaves a void under the plank, and the plank fails under traffic there.

Nail-down hardwood. More forgiving, but dips still produce squeaks and movement as boards flex against the fasteners.

Tile. The least forgiving of all, and the most expensive to fix. Tile is rigid, so any movement or unevenness produces cracked tile or cracked grout. Large-format tile magnifies this dramatically, because a bigger tile spans more variation.

The second half: moisture

Flatness is only half of subfloor prep. Moisture is the other, and it matters most on concrete slabs and over crawlspaces. Concrete releases moisture vapor for a long time and can transmit ground moisture indefinitely if there is no vapor barrier below it. That moisture goes straight into whatever is installed on top.

The result on hardwood is cupping and eventually delamination. On glued vinyl it is adhesive failure, and the floor lifts. It takes months to appear, so it is invariably blamed on the material rather than on the missing moisture test.

Testing is straightforward — a calcium chloride test or an in-slab relative humidity probe — and it costs very little compared to replacing a floor. Homes here with crawlspaces need the crawlspace conditions checked too, because moisture from below moves up through the subfloor.

The question that exposes a bad quote

Ask: what did you find when you checked the subfloor flatness and moisture, and what does the quote include for correcting it? A company that has checked gives you a specific answer. A company that has not will tell you it looks fine, which is not an answer.

What proper prep involves

Old flooring comes out first, including all fasteners, staples and adhesive residue — an installer who leaves staples in the subfloor is leaving high points that telegraph through. Then the subfloor gets checked with a straightedge or laser and mapped.

Low spots get filled with a cementitious patching compound or self-leveling underlayment. High spots get sanded or ground down. Loose or squeaking areas get re-secured to the joists. Damaged or water-stained sheathing gets replaced rather than covered. On concrete, moisture testing happens and a mitigation system goes in if the readings call for it.

Only then does the flooring go down.

Why the low quote is usually the prep quote

Material costs are roughly the same for everyone in this market. The variable between quotes is labor, and subfloor prep is where the labor hours are. When one quote comes in dramatically under the others, it is almost always because it assumes the subfloor is perfect and includes nothing for correcting it.

That job installs fine. It fails in year two, and the warranty claim gets denied because the manufacturer's flatness spec was not met.

We check the subfloor at the estimate and price the prep in writing before anything is ordered. Sometimes that means our number is higher than the other quote — and we would rather explain why now than explain a failure later. Call (704) 839-0001.

Hardwood

Refinish or Replace? How to Tell What Your Hardwood Needs

Hardwood floor sanded back to bare wood before staining and finishing

A large share of the hardwood floors we are called out to replace do not need replacing. They need one day of sanding and a new finish. Since refinishing costs a fraction of replacement, it is worth knowing how to tell the difference before you call anyone — including us.

Check 1: How much wood is left

This is the question that decides it. Solid hardwood can be sanded several times across its life because there is real thickness above the tongue. Engineered hardwood can only be sanded if its veneer is thick enough, and many engineered products have a wear layer too thin to sand even once.

You can check this yourself in about a minute. Pull up a floor register or look at the threshold at a doorway, where the board's cross section is visible. On solid hardwood you will see a thick, uniform piece of wood. On engineered you will see a thin top layer over visible plies. If that top layer is under roughly 2mm, sanding will go through it.

Check 2: Is the damage in the finish or in the wood?

Run your fingernail across a scratch. If it catches, the damage is in the wood. If it does not, the damage is only in the finish — and that is the best case, because it may not need a full sand at all.

Floors with worn or dull finish but sound wood underneath are candidates for a screen-and-recoat: the existing finish gets abraded and a fresh coat goes on. It is much faster, much cheaper and much less disruptive than a full refinish. It will not remove deep scratches or change color, but for a floor that just looks tired it is often all that is needed.

Check 3: Water damage and board movement

This is where refinishing hits its limit. Cupping — boards curled up at the edges — means moisture came from below. Sanding a cupped floor flat while it is still holding moisture guarantees it will crown once it dries, leaving a worse floor than before.

If your floor is cupped, the moisture source has to be found and fixed first, then the floor needs to dry fully, which can take weeks or months. Only then can it be evaluated. Boards that are black-stained, soft, or have separated from the subfloor are past refinishing and need replacing, though often only in that section.

Partial replacement is a real option

Water damage is usually localized — under a dishwasher, by a door, around a leaking radiator. Damaged boards can be cut out and replaced with matching material, then the entire floor sanded and refinished so the repair disappears completely. That costs far less than replacing the whole floor and is what we recommend most often.

When replacement genuinely is the answer

Four situations where we tell people to replace rather than refinish:

  • The wear layer is too thin to sand — engineered flooring already sanded once, or a thin-veneer product
  • Widespread water damage with soft, black or delaminated boards across large areas
  • The subfloor beneath has failed, which means the floor is coming up regardless
  • You want a completely different look that stain cannot achieve — going much lighter on a dark species, or changing board width

Note what is not on that list: scratches, dullness, pet damage, dated stain color, and surface stains. All of those come out with sanding.

What refinishing actually changes

People underestimate how much. A full sand removes scratches, pet marks, sun fading, water rings and old finish entirely, and you are back to bare wood. From there, stain color is fully open — a dark 1990s floor can become a natural or light modern one, which is the change most of our customers actually want and assume requires replacement.

The result is not a refreshed old floor. It is the same wood with a genuinely new surface, and most people cannot tell it apart from new flooring.

Family Homes

The Best Flooring for Kids, Dogs and Real Life

Red oak hardwood running continuously between rooms in a family home

Families shopping for flooring almost always ask for the most durable option. Durable is three different properties, though, and they trade against each other. Understanding which one your household actually needs is the difference between a floor you are happy with and a floor you are managing.

The three kinds of durable

Scratch resistance is how well the surface resists nails, grit, furniture and toys. Laminate leads this category by a wide margin — its wear layer is genuinely harder than a hardwood finish. Quality LVP with a thick wear layer is next. Hardwood is last, and no finish changes that ranking meaningfully.

Water resistance is what happens when liquid sits. LVP is fully waterproof. Tile is waterproof with sealed grout. Laminate swells permanently if water reaches its core. Hardwood is the most vulnerable, and water damage on wood is usually permanent.

Repairability is whether damage can be fixed without replacing the floor. Hardwood wins here decisively — it can be sanded back and refinished, erasing years of damage. Tile can have individual tiles replaced. LVP and laminate planks can sometimes be swapped in a floating installation. Once laminate or LVP wears out broadly, it gets replaced.

Notice no material wins all three. Choosing means deciding which failure you can live with.

Matching the property to the household

Large dogs. Scratch resistance first, then water for accidents. LVP with a 20 mil wear layer, or quality laminate if the rooms stay dry. Hardwood will show nail marks, period.

Toddlers. Water and cleanability matter more than scratches, because spills are constant and toys rarely gouge. LVP handles this well and is warmer and softer underfoot than tile.

Both, plus a long stay. This is where hardwood becomes defensible despite everything above. Yes it will get marked. But in year twelve it gets sanded flat and looks new again, which no other floor can do — and by then the kids are past the destructive years.

Rental property. LVP with a high wear layer, every time. It is cheap to replace one room, waterproof against tenant accidents, and does not require refinishing between tenants.

Texture matters more than hardness

If you want hardwood with dogs, choose wire-brushed or hand-scraped in a harder species like hickory. The texture hides nail marks in a way a smooth satin finish never will. The floor gets the same scratches — you just do not see them.

The things nobody mentions

Color hides more than material does. Very dark floors show every speck of dust, every paw print and every scratch as a light line. Very light floors show dirt and pet hair. Mid-tone floors with visible grain variation hide both, and this single choice affects daily life more than most material decisions.

Sheen matters as much as color. Glossy finishes highlight every imperfection and every scratch. Matte and satin scatter light and hide an enormous amount. For a family home, go matte.

Sound carries. Hard floors are louder than carpet, and LVP over a slab with no underlayment can be sharp and hollow. If you are removing carpet throughout, budget for good underlayment or plan on rugs — a lot of families are surprised by how much noisier the house becomes.

Where carpet still belongs

Hard flooring throughout is the default request now, and we install a lot of it. But carpet on bedrooms and stairs is still the right call in many family homes: it is warm, quiet, and considerably safer on stairs with small children. A mixed approach — hard flooring in living areas and traffic paths, carpet in bedrooms and on stairs — is what a lot of our clients end up choosing once we talk it through.

Come see it with your actual situation in mind

Tell us the ages of the kids, the size of the dogs, which rooms, and how long you plan to stay. We will narrow it to two or three products and let you take samples home. Call (704) 839-0001.

7 Questions to Ask Before You Buy Flooring in Monroe, NC

Close-up of a finished red oak floor installed by Alliance Floor Store

Flooring is one of the larger purchases people make for a home, and it is unusual in that the material and the labor are often sold by two different companies that blame each other when something goes wrong. These seven questions surface almost everything that matters.

1. Do your own employees install, or do you subcontract?

This is the most important question and the one most people never ask. Many flooring retailers are warehouses that sell material and hand the installation to whichever independent crew is available that week. You have no idea who is coming, and if there is a problem the store points at the installer and the installer points at the material.

Ask directly. If they subcontract, ask whether the same crew does every job, who warranties the labor, and who you call when something is wrong.

2. What did you find when you checked my subfloor?

A quote given over the phone, or given without pulling back any existing flooring, has not checked the subfloor. Since subfloor prep is where the labor hours and most failures live, that quote is a guess that gets corrected on installation day.

A company that has checked will tell you specifically: flatness over ten feet, moisture readings on slab or crawlspace, what needs leveling and what that costs.

3. What is the acclimation plan?

Material installed the day it arrives moves after installation. Ask how long the product needs per the manufacturer, whether it will be spread out in the actual rooms, and whether the HVAC will be running. A crew that can start tomorrow on a hardwood job is a crew skipping this.

The spec question

Ask what the manufacturer's flatness and moisture requirements are for the product they are selling you. Anyone who does not know is not reading installation instructions, and improper preparation is the first thing a manufacturer checks when denying a warranty claim.

4. Is the quote itemized, and what exactly is included?

Get material, labor, subfloor prep, removal and haul-away, furniture moving, transitions and trim listed separately. The items that most commonly appear later as extras: transition strips and thresholds, quarter round or shoe molding, stair nosings, subfloor leveling, old flooring disposal, and moving furniture and appliances.

A quote without these listed is not cheaper. It is incomplete.

5. What is the actual wear layer or veneer thickness?

For LVP, ask for the wear layer in mils — 6 mil and 20 mil look identical in the showroom and perform completely differently. For engineered hardwood, ask the veneer thickness in millimeters, which determines whether it can ever be refinished. For carpet, ask the pad specification, not just the carpet.

These are the numbers that separate products at very different prices that look the same on the display rack.

6. Who warranties what, and for how long?

There are two separate warranties on every flooring job. The manufacturer warranties the material against defects. The installer warranties the labor. Ask for both in writing, ask how long the labor warranty runs, and ask what voids the manufacturer warranty — because improper installation usually does.

7. What are the start and finish dates?

Ask for both in writing, ask how many days the crew will actually be in your home, and ask what happens if material arrives damaged or backordered. Flooring installation displaces your life — furniture out, rooms unusable — so an open-ended schedule is a real cost.

Two warning signs

A price quoted without a measure. Nobody can price flooring accurately without measuring and looking at the subfloor. A phone number is a starting point for negotiation, not a quote.

A large deposit before material is ordered. A deposit covering material is normal and reasonable. Most of the contract before anything has been ordered or delivered is not.

Our answers, in advance

Our own crew installs everything we sell, so there is one company responsible. We check subfloor flatness and moisture at the estimate and price the prep in writing. We build acclimation into the schedule. Our quotes itemize material, labor, prep, removal, furniture moving and all trim. We will tell you the wear layer and veneer thickness of anything on our floor without being asked. And you get a start date and a finish date.

Ask us all seven — and ask the other companies too. Call (704) 839-0001.

Terms of Service

Last updated: September 2026

These Terms of Service govern your use of the website alliancefloorstoreinc.com and any products and services provided by Alliance Floor Store Inc, a corporation operating in Monroe, North Carolina. By using this site, purchasing materials or engaging our installation services, you agree to these terms.

Products and Services

Alliance Floor Store Inc supplies and installs hardwood flooring, engineered hardwood, luxury vinyl plank, laminate, tile and stone, and carpet, and provides hardwood refinishing and repair services for residential and commercial clients in North Carolina and South Carolina.

Estimates and Pricing

Estimates are provided free of charge and are based on measurements taken and conditions observed at the time of the in-home visit. Estimates are valid for 30 days unless stated otherwise. Conditions discovered after work begins — including subfloor damage, moisture problems, structural issues, asbestos-containing materials in older flooring, or previously concealed repairs — may require a change order and an adjusted price, which we will present to you in writing before proceeding.

Measurements and Material Quantities

Flooring orders include an industry-standard overage allowance to account for cuts, waste and pattern matching. This overage is part of the material you purchase and remains yours. We recommend retaining leftover material for future repairs, since dye lots and production runs change over time and exact matches may not be available later.

Material Variation

Natural products vary. Hardwood, natural stone and to a lesser degree printed products will show variation in color, grain, veining and character between samples and delivered material, and between boxes within the same order. Showroom samples and photographs are representative, not exact. This variation is a characteristic of the product and is not a defect.

Special Orders and Deposits

A deposit is required on special-order and custom materials before they are ordered from the manufacturer. Special-order materials are non-returnable and non-refundable once ordered, as they cannot be returned to the manufacturer. We will identify clearly at the time of sale which items are special order.

Acclimation and Site Conditions

You agree to provide a conditioned space with HVAC operating at normal living temperature during material acclimation and installation, as required by flooring manufacturers. Installation into an unconditioned space, or before required acclimation is complete, voids manufacturer warranties, and we will not proceed under those conditions.

Subfloor Conditions

Flooring manufacturers specify flatness, moisture and structural requirements for their products. Our estimates identify the subfloor preparation we can observe at the time of measurement. Conditions that cannot be seen until existing flooring is removed — including damaged sheathing, moisture intrusion, structural deflection or inadequate substrate — may require additional work priced as a change order before installation can proceed.

Scheduling and Delivery

Start and completion dates are provided in good faith and depend on material availability and delivery from manufacturers and distributors. Manufacturer backorders, freight delays and damaged shipments are outside our control. We will notify you promptly of any delay and provide a revised schedule.

Client Responsibilities

You agree to remove and secure valuables, breakables, electronics, artwork and irreplaceable items before installation; to disconnect and reconnect specialty appliances, gas lines and plumbing where required; to provide access to the work areas and to electrical power; to keep pets and children clear of active work areas; and to disclose any known moisture problems, prior water damage or suspected asbestos-containing flooring.

Asbestos in Existing Flooring

Older vinyl tile, sheet vinyl and their adhesives may contain asbestos. We do not remove or disturb suspected asbestos-containing materials. If such material is identified or suspected, work stops and licensed abatement is required before we can proceed. Alternatively, in many cases new flooring can be installed over the existing material without disturbing it, and we will discuss that option with you.

Payment

Payment terms are set out in your individual estimate or contract. A deposit is required for materials, with the balance due on completion unless otherwise agreed in writing. Title to materials passes on full payment. Late payments may be subject to additional charges as permitted by North Carolina law.

Warranties

Two separate warranties apply to your project. Materials are warranted by their manufacturer under that manufacturer's terms, which we will provide to you. Our installation labor is warranted by us as stated in your written estimate or contract. Manufacturer warranties commonly exclude damage from moisture, improper maintenance, inadequate acclimation, unsuitable site conditions, normal wear, and installation contrary to their instructions. Warranties do not cover damage caused by structural movement, water intrusion, or work altered by others.

Communications and Text Messages

By providing your phone number you consent to receive calls and SMS text messages from Alliance Floor Store Inc regarding your estimate, material orders, delivery, scheduling and project updates. Message and data rates may apply and message frequency varies. Reply STOP to opt out of text messages at any time, or HELP for assistance. Consent to receive messages is not a condition of purchase. Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages. No mobile information will be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes.
